The attached screenshot is from the Devon CC Highways website (https://www.devon.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/report-a-problem/map/map_src/gritbins/). It shows the numbered grit bins in our parish:
388 near Limers Cross
389 and 390 by Sunnyside Farm and on the lane beyond
436 on lane to Higher Crook Farm
412 by the Village Hall
435 by the Nursery (Jacksons)
I have reported 412 and 435 as empty to DCC. Also an unmapped bin by the Church gate is reported as empty.
If anyone knows that 388, 389, 390 or 436 are empty you can report them on the DCC website using the link above. It’s easy to do but I’ll do it for you if it’s a problem (just send me the details).
I have also reported the missing grit bin which was on the hill coming down into the village between the crossroads and Edwards Close. We’ll get this replaced one way or another.
Members of the public have no legal responsibility to clear public roads or pavements. However, the government encourages people to act in a “public-spirited” manner and clear snow and ice carefully from paths and areas outside their property.
When clearing snow, avoid using hot water, which can refreeze into black ice.
Grit from public grit bins is strictly for use on public roads and pavements, not private driveways or property.
If you choose to spread grit: first clear snow, then apply a thin, even layer(about 10-40g per square meter). For best results, spread it before ice forms, allowing traffic to break it down into brine; use sand for immediate grip if already icy, but avoid excessive salt to protect plants.
Thank you.
Kind regards
